SIC Codes
Included with EDA's 52 fields of data is the field named "BUYSIC". Part of EDA's value added encancement process is to populate this field with the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code for each buyer in EDA's database. EDA utilizes the 1987 SIC classification version. Click here for EDA's SIC Code Table
34 EDA proprietary SIC Codes - Over the years, EDA's customers had requested further, more detailed classifications for some of the broader SIC classifications, primarily in the construction industry. For example, EDA SIC 1624 "Water Sewer"; the SIC manual suggests that activity be placed in 1623 "Utility Construction", which is light duty utility construction work, cablevision, etc. Thus, EDA created EDA SIC 1624 to better reflect how the larger equipment, excavators for example, were really being used. This table is not dynamic; EDA has not amended it in several years.
What is the difference between SIC and NAICS?
The NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) was launched to replace the SIC classification system. However, over the years, the adoption of the new classification system by EDA's customer has been very slow. While there are a few customers that would like EDA to convert to the NAICS system, polling of our customers has shown that the majority prefer the SIC system because they are comfortable with and like the SIC categorization.
We will continue to monitor demand for the NAICS system by our user community. If we see a future demand, we will certainly explore the option of converting our system from SIC to NAICS or possibly supporting both options.
